Jonathan Against an Impossible Army By Ismael Burciaga

Israel was trapped under the weight of fear. The Philistines had spread across the land, controlling the blacksmiths and leaving Israel nearly weaponless. Only Saul and his son Jonathan carried swords. Many soldiers hid in caves or waited in silence, unsure how to face an enemy so well armed. Saul remained where he was, hoping for direction. Jonathan, however, believed God was not finished. Quietly, he turned to his armor bearer with a plan of faith. Jonathan said that they would cross over toward the Philistine outpost. If the enemy told them to stay where they were, they would stop. But if the Philistines called them forward, Jonathan said it would be a sign that the Lord had handed them over into his hands.

As they climbed through the narrow pass, the Philistines noticed them and shouted for them to come up. Jonathan knew the sign was clear. With one sword, he stepped forward in obedience. He struck the enemy, and his armor bearer followed close behind. One fell after another as fear began to ripple through the camp.

Then God moved. Panic and confusion swept through the Philistine army. The ground trembled, and soldiers turned their weapons on each other. What began with two men and one sword became a victory led by the hand of the Lord. That day, Israel learned that faith paired with obedience invites God’s power. When His people move forward, even with little, He brings the victory.
