The Lie That Led to Death: Ananias and Sapphira By Ismael Burciaga
In the early days of the church, believers shared what they had so no one was in need. Their unity was strong, and God’s power was moving among them. Ananias and Sapphira also wanted to appear generous. They sold a piece of property, kept part of the money, and brought the rest while pretending it was the full amount.
Ananias came first. He placed the money at the apostles’ feet, expecting honor for his giving. Peter looked at him and said, “Ananias, why have you let this lie fill your heart? The land was yours. The money was yours. You did not have to pretend. You have not lied to people. You have lied to God.” The moment Peter finished speaking, Ananias fell to the ground and died. Fear spread through everyone who heard what happened.
About three hours later, Sapphira came in, unaware of her husband’s fate. Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you received for the land?” She answered, “Yes, that is the price.” Peter said, “How could you agree together to test the Spirit of the Lord?” Sapphira instantly fell dead at his feet, just as her husband had.
The young men carried her out and buried her beside Ananias. The entire church was filled with fear and awe. Their story became a lasting reminder that God sees every motive and that honesty before Him is not optional. Faith is not about looking spiritual. It is about truth before God.
