God brought the man into the Garden of Eden for him to work the land and live there. He told him that he could eat from any of the trees in the garden except for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God warned him that if he ate the fruit, he would die.

Then God looked at Adam and said, “It is not good for you to be alone. I will make you a helper that is suitable for you.”

God then had Adam name all the animals in the Garden that He had created. However, there was no suitable helper for Adam.

So, God had Adam fall into a deep sleep. Once Adam was asleep, God removed one of Adam’s ribs and created a woman from the rib of the man.

So the Lord brought the woman to the man and the man said, “She shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”

During this time the man and the woman were naked, but it didn’t bother them at all.

The Fall of Man

Now of all the animals God had made, the serpent was the craftiest. The serpent came to the woman and tempted her to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

He manipulated her saying, “You will not die. God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The woman listened to the serpent, believed him,  took the fruit and ate it. Adam was with her during this time and when she handed him the fruit he ate it as well. Right after this they realized that they were naked and they were ashamed, so they clothed themselves with fig leaves.

Then Adam and the woman heard the Lord walking in the garden, so they hid. God asked for them and they wouldn’t answer. Eventually, they came out and explained to God that they were ashamed because they were naked.

God knew that they had eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because that was the only way they would know that they were naked and have shame. When questioning them about it, Adam blamed the woman. And the woman blamed the serpent.

So, the Lord cursed the serpent, saying that he would crawl on his belly and eat dust. He said that there would be hatred between all the offspring of the woman and the serpent.

He told the woman that her pain in childbearing would increase and that her desire would be for her husband and he would rule over her.

To Adam he said that the ground would be cursed because of his disobedience. Through pain, toil, and sweat he would eat of it.

After this Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all living things. Then God clothed Adam and Eve and sent them out of the Garden and blocked them from ever being able to return again.
